Examples of what can MCHBI be used for... And how to do it...
Finding details of a single Medieval coin hoard. Go to the "Simple Search" tab, and type the name of the required hoard into the search box. The map will then show that hoard, and also any with a similar name. Click on the hoard name for further details.
Reviewing all hoards within a specified area. Draw an area of interest using the polygon or circle tools, accessed from icons at the top left hand side of the screen. Only those hoards which are located within the specified area will remain on the map.
Reviewing hoards deposited within a certain time period. Use the "Sliders" tab to select hoards with an attribute within a given range - i.e hoard deposition date, hoard discovery date, minimum number of coins, or hoard data quality. As one adjusts the slider control the hoards displayed on the map will change appropriately.
Filter hoards by means of writing a specific query. Use the "Advanced Search" tab and construct a query. The Advanced Search feature is very flexible, and can be used to interrogate the database for almost any set of conditions imaginable. Further details are available in the MCHBI Help section on the BNS website.
Locating hoards containing a specified type of coin of a given ruler. Go to the last tab on the right, "Coin Type Search". Start by selecting the coin issuer of interest from the pull-down list. This will result in a list of the available different coin types for that ruler. Select the coin type you are interested in. One may select more than one coin type by use of the key on your keyboard. Relevant hoards will display on the map. Note that hoards will only be shown where the coin types have been logged in the program - this is an ongoing task so all relevant hoards may not be shown.
Generate a report with details of the filtered hoards one has selected. Having used the various filter options to display the hoards of interest one may then view, print and/or save a PDF report of the hoard summary sheets. In the Main Menu, top right-hand side, the "Generate Report" icon is the third from the left. Reports are limited to 100 records.

If the main menu is not showing: you may access it by clicking on the link on the bottom screen border.

For additional help go to the first tab ("Settings") and enable "Help Hints" - when enabled this will result in pop-ups providing explanatory text or videos whenever you hover your mouse over an icon or other help-enabled location. Further help is available from the MCHBI section of the BNS website.

When searching Hoards by hoard number, please enclose the hoard number in quotation marks.

If the system does not seem to be working correctly, or give you the results you are expecting, then clear the filter and try again (3rd icon from right on the top row).

Users may select a range of multiple coin types to search for by using the <shift> key when clicking on the two end-members of a range, or alternatively may select multiple types not in a continuous range by using the <CTRL> key when clicking on selections.

Changing a value immediately updates the map, and this search is handled in addition to all other searches. You may wish to reset your filters before using this search.
